Angelic Descent by Dee-T Angelic Descent by Dee-T
Nelson Lakes National Park
New Zealand

Marianne , Charlotte and I recently returned from a fantastic trip to New Zealand and Sydney. Part of the trip included a hike (alone) to Angelus Hut near Lake Rotoiti. Despite not being one of the 'great walks' in New Zealand, it is still very popular with locals, particularly since we were visiting around Anzac day. Due to the bad weather on the outward hike, there was a 40% no show rate at the hut that evening which made things cosy and comfy. The next morning, I really got up with a hope to simply see the distant mountains but instead, a brief intense light show arose on the eastern horizon. Thereafter, the clouds drifted in and the blustery grey continued. I would highly recommend this hike as the surrounding areas are just pristine and rugged.

Your experiences and photos make me want to condition my lazy self for hiking and strike out on the trail! Of course, I doubt there's anything worthwhile to shoot in this dusty pit of hell...

People always taking shots across the direction of flow but this shows the greatness of the mountains and long way of this little creek.

Great stuff! I did this one by myself too, a few months back before I moved to Sydney. Sadly no clouds or great light for the 2 days I was up there, but man the night skies were incredible. Managed to get a few star trails with reflections in the lake :D

Greg that would have been amazing! it was something I had my fingers crossed for but I ended up getting 100km winds with horizontal rain but sooooo grateful for the break of cloud on the horizon right at dawn

Haha sounds like an experience! In that case I'm guessing you didn't make it up Mount Angelus? I'm super keen to do the hike to the lake again but in winter, I was talking to the hut warden and he said the lake was frozen enough to walk across right up until the end of November. Crazy stuff...

I started up the path to sunset saddle but the winds just got stronger and there was grey stuff literally flowing over the hills - evasive manouvre back to hut to avoid getting sodden lol - definitely going to return to here !
